06:27 | FOBISIA Games Run, Jump, Shoot and Score U15 FOBISIA Games 2014, Tanglin Trust School, Singapore
The U15 FOBISIA Team travelled to Singapore to compete in the A1 FOBISIA Games on Nov 28 – Dec 2nd. At the end of the last academic year Shrewsbury were promoted into this A1 group which is the top 6 British International Schools in Asia. This was a great accolade and one that we were very proud of. Our team have been working extremely hard since August over the three sports of Athletics, Basketball and Football perfecting technique and skill across the events in preparation for the games. Nerves were high but the excitement in the camp was electric. Day 1: Athletics We travelled to TTS Athletics Field for the Track and Field Meet. On an extremely hot day we knew it was going to be tough. Field Events were in the morning which were historically a strength for SHB. We podium placed in all events. A fantastic start to the tournament and a real boost to our team.
Highlights: Field Events Pimmy: High Jump winner Tie: High Jump winner, Runner Up Long Jump, 3rd place triple jump Gigi: Shot Put, Discus winner, Javelin Runner Up George: High Jump 3rd, Long Jump 3rd place Klesa: Long Jump 3rd place Kan: Discus Winner, Javelin 3rd place Pat: 2nd place Shot Put Pee: Discus winner, Shot Put Runner Up Mark: Long Jump Runner Up, 3rd place High Jump Joei: Javelin Runner Up, Shot Put Runner Up Robbie: Runner Up Triple Jump Ozone: Discus Winner, Javelin 3rd place
In the afternoon, after rain and storms had stopped play for a number of hours, we resumed with the track events. Although this is usually a weaker area for Shrewsbury we competed and performed brilliantly achieving performances and results way beyond our expectations.
Highlights: Track Events Pimmy: 100 C runner up, 300B winner Gigi: 100B Runner Up Klesa: 100A Runner Up, 200m Runner Up Mark: 100A Third place Earn: 300A Third place George: 400B Third place Ozone: 400A Third place Tie: 800m Third place
The conclusion to Day 1 was the Relays. This took the form of a Medley Relay with a 400m/200m/100m/100m. A new concept for the games so we were excited to see how we would do. Our girls team of Koto, Gigi, Klesa and Pimmy were on fire dominating the event and winning gold. The boys team of George, Mark, William and Robbie fought gallantly and achieved a respectable third place behind TTS and DCS.
Day 2: Basketball The boys and girls basketball teams were up early to travel to TTS school on Sunday morning for a full day of 5 games for the FOBISIA Basketball Event. The girls had been unbeaten all year and the boys were going into the event focused and ready for action. After the first two games it became clear that we were the favorites for the girls and the boys was going to end up with a show down in the last game against BPS. Unfortunately a little blip against TTS in the girls game meant we have lost one and won four. This meant that the girls were in a points difference situation with a three way tie. On count back we were one basket off Dulwich College and ended with a highly respectable Runner Up Team Award. MVP was Gigi who fought gallantly for every second of every game. The boys had won every game going into their 5th and final game with BPS which was to be the show down and final game to decide the winner. BPS had come of a BISAC win and were favorites but Pee and the rest of the team were not ready to let this happen again. With unbelievable team spirit, energy, and true grit the boys dominated every second of the game beating BPS 28-16 and becoming the reigning U15 FOBISIA Basketball Champions. This was the first time in the history of Shrewsbury that we have achieved this. Special mentions must go to Pee (captain) who mentally and physically drove the team to very win. Round up: Boys Games 28-15 win (against TTS) 35-19 win (against DSS) 42-11 win (against KLASS) 43-27 win (against GIS) 28-16 win (against BPS)
Day 3: Football On a wet and windy day the Shrewsbury Teams fought gallantly in a tough day of 5 games. On top of the intensive day of basketball our students were weary and tired but worked hard in effort, commitment and energy throughout the day. Our girls ended up going into the final game against KLASS with the possibility of a Runner Up Award. Unfortunately, it was just one game too much and with a 1-0 defeat they achieved 4th place overall. The boys struggled throughout their games with a lack of defensive play and tired legs but they all produced great sportsmanship and team cohesion to achieve 6th overall.
On reflection of the U15 Games 2014 Shrewsbury produced some fantastic performances throughout the 4 days and demonstrated our strength and depth across the sports in Asia.
Well done to all of our competitors and thank you to the coaches Mr Radcliffe, Mr Rozario, Mr McKernan and Ms Rawlinson.
