Shrewsbury Vs Thailand Barbarians

07/10/2020 @ Greeny Grass

After a swift warm up in-between games and a compulsory team photo we made our way to the side-line. After the previous week, the team were hoping for less of a beating and to get some tries on our side of the score board. The squad consisted of 5 members of staff and 8 varsity level players. The Barbarians looked strong but the defence from Louis on the wing and a very early try from Joe Emsley combined with the Kaddoura sisters attacking speed meant we found ourselves 2-0 up and glad to be there. Paul Rotheram and Joe made some awesome runs pushing the opposing defence right back to our try line allowing us to make the breaks for tries. By half time the score settled at 4-4 after a couple of the strong barbarian players making a run through a gap. After a motivational talk from Paul and Phil at half time we were more than ready to go out and fight back. Matt Wilkins managed a breakthrough try leaving the Barbarians halfway down the pitch and Phil Pethybridge came on giving Louis Audibert a quick rest from the wing. The way we were playing by advancing up the pitch and taking quicker roll back passes meant their defence was under a lot more pressure. Our communication was much stronger with our own team and the referee. Commitment from our attack was clear but the defence had also improved. Mollie made some excellent runs chasing the Barbarians attack right up to the try line. Despite Joe and Angie taking a tumble on their try line in utter commitment to stop their attack, by the end of the 40 minutes the score was a very respectable: 7-8 to the Barbarians.

Overall, we were very happy with the performance put in with top efforts from every player. A special mention to Angie as the top try scorer with 3 tries putting us in a much stronger place for the next match in the league.
