SHB 7-0 St Andrews

Shrewsbury ran out comfortable winners against a St. Andrews team who frustrated the home team at the Harrow Cup two weeks previously. JJ opened the scoring after a free-flowing move laid it on the plate for the right winger. With possession approximately 75%-25% in our favour it was perhaps surprising that the scoreline was only 1-0 at half-time. Matter not, the 2nd half continued in the same vein. At times the Shrewsbury boys reminded me of Arsenal under Arsene Wenger in the early 2000’s, where they would dissect a defence and seemingly walk the ball into the back of the net. JJ’s 2nd goal was a sublime team move with some lovely one-touch football inside the St Andrews box finished with an expertly timed lay-off by Kiyan for JJ to slot into the open net. Kiyan grabbed the goal his endeavours deserved shortly after and there was still time for Poom to score a thunderbolt into the roof of the net. Poom was fantastic all game, making important sacrificial runs in behind the St Andrews defence to create space for Kiyan in the middle of the pitch and also dropping into little pockets of space to link play with our two inverted wingers who often rolled inside or Kiyan again supporting from deep positions. Shrewsbury’s press and counter-press was so relentless in St Andrews half that their only real option was long balls over the top of our defensive line. Kiri is certainly maturing as a player and a leader. He was excellent in the back two, dealing with high balls confidently and sweeping up behind the lines when St Andrews strikers had broken free. Pote was largely untested apart from an excellent 1v1 save which he smothered well to keep yet another clean sheet.

Another comprehensive victory. Next up, Patana on the Canterbury Field on the 10th December 3:30pm KO.
